Hobo Meals

One of our favorite meals while camping (old school, cabin or motor home) is hobo meals. You may be very familiar with these but I didn't know of them until our nephew enlightened us one year at Bass Lake. Basically, it's fool proof because it's based on a bar-style assembly. I firmly believe that any meal that allows for one to assemble their own food is going to be a hit. Taco bars, potato bars, salad bars and now hobo meals.

Basically, you take squares of foil (I double layer to ensure moisture. Punctures are common.) and add meat (ground beef or turkey). I cut up veggies (anything goes but potatoes, onions, carrots, squash, zucchini, corn and onions are staples) and set up an assembly line. Each person layers veggies on top of their meat. Add salt and pepper, onion soup mix, BBQ sauce or ketchup (or any combo) to your meat and veggies. I like to add a splash of beer or V8 but water will also do. Seal the foil and label. Add to a grill and soon you will have the perfect (for you) hobo meal.

I realize this photo may not make you salivate, but it really hits the spot and is made to order.

Is the ground beef or turkey already cooked before you add them to foil or do they cook in foil?

Raw, baby! It cooks like a stew if you add some liquid. Turkey is leaner and may do better with more beer or v8. These are fun to do with a group--especially with kids. They make their own so they like their crazy concoctions.
