Assignment: Your Memoir

Thursday, July 3, 2008
Have you heard the legend that Hemingway was challenged to write a story in only six words? His response “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six Word Memoirs by Famous and Obscure Writers is one of my new favorite books. This addictive book of six word phrases has been compiled by the online storytelling magazine SMITH. Self described as a storytelling community: a place to read, write, and share stories, SMITH asked readers to submit six-word memoirs, thus proving that storytelling doesn't take volumes.

This book is fascinating, funny, and sometimes moving. I flip through it and can't put it down.
"Brought it to a boil, often." --Mario Batali
"I still make coffee for two."--Zak Nelson
"Fifteen years since last professional haircut."--Dave Eggers
"We were our own Springer episode."--Michelle Hoogerwerf
...I could go on...

The collection includes almost 1,000 six-word memoirs, including those from celebrities such as Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, Dave Eggers, Richard Ford, Deepak Chopra, Moby, and more.
It's a good gift or bathroom read.

Now, I challenge you....What is your six word memoir?

Love this book too. I gave it to girlfriend for a gift a week ago. Last night over wine with "the girls" everyone was trying to come up with there own 6 word memoir. It's fun and gets your thoughts stirring.

Sarah,

Love the blog! Hey, I too love this book! My mom turned me on to this and I visit it often, especially when I am waiting in the car lane at my kids schools.
