New Meaning to Summer Project

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

As usual, I am not the first one on the scene. Perhaps you know of the Twilight Saga series? Given that the first book has been made into a motion picture to be released later in November, it's clear that many, many people are aware of this series. (It's technically teen lit but I don't let that hold me up.)

My friends have been raving about the series -- stating that they are staying up until 1 AM to read more. With our schedules that says a lot. Willing to sacrifice sleep for reading....not sure I could go there just yet. And with the basic premise of the books involving a love story between a human and a vampire I was certain this was not a series for me. I don't do scary.

Well, on a recent trip to see my sister and her new baby I found myself with some actual down time (say what?!). I scooted out to the bookstore and decided to give it a go. I had been assured by my friends that it isn't scary and definitely worth the read. I am half way through the first book, Twlight, and can concur. So far, SO GOOD! In fact, I can't wait to get back to it. (Side bar: It was a fun connection to begin reading while on a trip to Phoenix. The main character is from Phoenix and is the author.)

What I really like about this series is that the author, Stephanie Meyer, is a mom who literally dreamt the book. She began writing while her kids were at swim lessons and in the course of that summer finished a 500 page book. And what did I do last summer?

I will simply say, I am inspired. A new bee is swarming in my bonnet!

I just knew you were going to be blogging about this one today. O.k. O.k. maybe I'll look into this book, you are the 4th person this week to tell me about it.

Oh man... it's hard to admit but it is SO GOOD! Good luck being able to find time to take care of children while you fly through the other 3 books.

I've read them all. I was dubious at first but my mom brought the first two over for me to read them and I was hooked. At least I'm not the only one.

Glad you had a moment to reconnect with the non-mommy part of your brain. Next time you're in town maybe we could meet for coffee.

Sarah: I will certainly let you know next time I hit Phoenix. A pumpkin spice latte will definitely be in order.
