Beautiful Miss Potter

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

"There's something delicious about writing the first words of a story; you never know where they'll take you."

We have been known to let our movies sit for weeks (which is why the no return date policy works for us). Recently, we received Miss Potter and it lay in wait for several summer weeks. I was about to return it without viewing, settling that we must just not be into it, when my friend Michelle encouraged me to see it. She dubbed it a 'beautiful' movie and worth the time.

So we snuggled up and popped in the movie. Michelle was right. It is a lovely film. I love it so much I have it on order--and that's notable. I don't like a lot of movies. So many are dumbed down and not worth the time (snob, huh?!). Hardly any make the cut for ownership.

This movie made it's way to a repeat performance and we had a family movie night the following night (much to the delight of the kiddos). The whole family loved it and here's a few reasons why:

* 'Beautiful' story with artful performances and beloved characters (who doesn't love Peter Rabbit?!)

* Inspired us to review our collection of Beatrix's tales.

* Not dumbed down and still wholesome. I love that the language was not geared for a child and the yet it was still perfectly appropriate for them to see (and I have a high standard for kid appropriateness)

* Curious similarities with Beatrix and her brother's passions and my own kids' favorite past times. (Instantly relatable.) My kids are budding entomologists and artsy fartsy creatives.

* New inspiration for watercoloring

* Tea-time must have a resurgence. The husband and I have tea every night but I love the connection people made during tea time. They actually engaged in conversation (gasp!) and listened to one another. We need some more civility in our lives people!

* The creative inspiration is endless. I even loved her portfolio and am adding that to my 'things to make one day' file.

* I think I may know a modern-day Beatrix--someone who listens to her characters and lets them dictate their fate.

* It has inspired a trip back to the Lake District and the British Isles with the family. It may be our first international trip (in a few years).

* I think the movie would make a great gift paired with the Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter and a journal or the Box Collection .

I could go on...

Once again, I have to thank Michelle for showing me the beauty!
